Gloved hand holding Stjarnagloss Bubblor car wash in snow foam: best shampoo for ceramic coated cars

Why your shampoo matters on a coated car

A ceramic coating is one of the best things you can do for your paint, but it isn't a force field. Every wash either helps it keep that slick, water-beading finish, or slowly wears it down.

The right shampoo cleans away road film and traffic grime without attacking the coating, and some even top up its protection as you wash. The wrong one, like a harsh traffic film remover or a wash-and-wax shampoo, can dull the finish or leave a layer that hides the coating's beading.

Below, we explain what to look for, share our favourite ceramic-safe shampoos from the My Car Cleaning shampoo range, and walk you through the safe way to wash a coated car.

Our top picks

Gyeon Q2M Bathe: best everyday wash

If you want a no-nonsense shampoo that simply cleans and leaves your coating alone, Gyeon Q2M Bathe is hard to beat. It's a pH neutral (pH 6), highly concentrated gel that Gyeon says is "gentle enough not to affect coatings or sealants". At a 1:500 ratio, you only need 15–20ml per wash, so a bottle lasts.

Best for: regular maintenance washes on any coated car.

Stjarnagloss Bubblor: best pure shampoo

Stjarnagloss Bubblor is a pH neutral "pure" shampoo with no added gloss enhancers, so nothing sits on top of your coating. It's suitable for gloss, satin and matt finishes and contains limescale inhibitors to help reduce water spots, handy if you live in a hard water area. Use 1:800 for regular washes.

Best for: purists, matt finishes and hard water areas.

Gyeon Q2M Bathe+: best SiO2 top-up shampoo

Gyeon Q2M Bathe+ is a pH neutral shampoo with an active SiO2 ingredient. As you wash, it leaves a thin hydrophobic layer that boosts your existing coating, so you'll see the beading come back after you rinse. Use 15–20ml in around 12 litres of water.

Best for: keeping a Gyeon or other quartz coating performing like new.

Gtechniq Ceramic GWash: best for extra water repellency

Gtechniq Ceramic GWash is a low-suds, high-lubrication wash that leaves a durable, dirt-repellent, hydrophobic layer behind. It's safe for matt and satin finishes. Use 20ml per 10 litres of water, and pair it with a Gtechniq WM2 wash mitt.

Best for: Gtechniq coating owners and anyone who wants a stronger top-up.

Sam's Detailing Shampoo: best for foamy, fun washes

Sam's Detailing Shampoo is a pH neutral shampoo that's safe for all waxes, sealants and ceramic coatings. Add one or two squeezes to your bucket for lots of thick lather, with a bubblegum scent to boot.

Best for: weekend washes where you want plenty of suds.

Gyeon Q2M Restart Wash: best deep-cleaning wash for coatings

Over time, coatings can get clogged with traffic film and iron deposits, making them bead less. Gyeon Q2M Restart Wash is a coating rejuvenating shampoo (pH 6) with a built-in iron remover, designed to restore the original properties of coated surfaces. Use it every month or two, or whenever your beading starts to fade, rather than for every wash.

Best for: reviving a coating that's lost its beading.

How to wash a ceramic coated car

  1. Work in the shade on cool paint. Washing in direct sun dries shampoo and water onto the coating, leaving spots.
  2. Rinse and pre-wash. Rinse off loose dirt, then cover the car in a pH neutral snow foam from our snow foam and pre-wash range. Let it dwell, then rinse it away along with the grime it lifts.
  3. Set up two buckets. One with your chosen shampoo, one with clean rinse water, ideally both with grit guards. Rinse your mitt in the clean bucket before going back into the shampoo.
  4. Wash top to bottom. Use a plush microfibre mitt such as the Gtechniq WM2, working in straight lines and leaving the dirtiest lower panels until last.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. A coating in good health will sheet the water off. If it doesn't, it's probably time for a Gyeon Q2M Restart Wash.
  6. Add a top-up (optional). Spray a rinse aid such as Gyeon Q2M Wet Coat onto the wet car and rinse off to boost beading in seconds. Browse more in our rinse aids range.
  7. Dry gently. Use a large, soft towel from our drying towels range, patting or dragging it lightly. For extra slickness, mist on Gyeon Q2M Ceramic Detailer as a drying aid.

FAQs

Can I use normal car shampoo on a ceramic coated car? Yes, as long as it's pH neutral and doesn't contain wax. Many everyday shampoos fit the bill, such as Gyeon Q2M Bathe or Stjarnagloss Bubblor.

Do I need a ceramic or SiO2 shampoo? You don't need one, but it helps. An SiO2 shampoo like Gyeon Q2M Bathe+ tops up protection with every wash, keeping beading strong between maintenance sessions.

How often should I wash a ceramic coated car? Every one to two weeks is ideal for most daily drivers. Regular washing stops dirt from bonding to the coating and dulling its finish.

Why has my coating stopped beading? Usually it's covered in a layer of traffic film or contamination rather than worn away. A decon wash such as Gyeon Q2M Restart Wash often brings the beading straight back.

Can I use snow foam on a coated car? Yes. A pH neutral snow foam is a great first step to remove grit before you touch the paint.

Keep your coating looking its best

The best shampoo for a ceramic coated car is one that cleans gently and lets the coating shine. Start with a pure, pH neutral wash for everyday use, add an SiO2 shampoo or rinse aid to top up protection, and keep a coating decon wash on the shelf for when the beading fades.
